I used to think (or maybe just quietly hope) that once my shop was set up… that would be the hardest part. You know… the whole get the site built, upload the photos, write the descriptions, hit publish … and then sit back and wait for customers to be clamoring to buy stuff from me. Okay, so that's dramatic, but you get the point.
Spoiler alert: That didn't happen ... and I know not to sit and hold my breath ... or I'll get dizzier than I am already. 😉
The reality is, there is no magic. There’s just … (sigh) a lot of work.
It's really not the bad kind of work ... not the “wtf, ugh I hate this” kind of work ... but the kind that no one really talks about. ... and something that most of us do not do on a daily basis. The behind-the-scenes stuff ... like, like the getting people to actually find my business work. The getting seen part.
The truth is, people aren’t not finding your business because your stuff isn’t good. I'm sure your handmade creations are awesome! They’re not finding it because … well, they don’t even know it exists yet. They don't know what fabulous work you are offering ... and in today’s world, that’s the hardest part.
So I’m going to start sharing what really goes into getting people to find a new website.
This is about the reality of how ‘I just need to make a simple post’ somehow turns into hours (sometimes days!) of work. This is about being social (and not the kind where you go out and grab a margarita (with salt on the rim please) ... but the part where you try to show up in as many of the online socials as possible so someone (anyone!) might see what you’ve created.
So, if you’ve ever wondered what that actually looks like … or if you’re building a small business or online presence of your own and thinking: “Wait … is it supposed to be this much work?”
Yes.
Yes, it is. 😄
